Commodity Manager
Summary: Subject matter procurement expert for the assigned goods
and/or services. Researches suppliers from a variety of usual and
unusual sources. Expert knowledge of supplier availability, market
and delivery conditions to determine optimal source selection and
insure availability of supplies. Confers with suppliers to obtain
product or service information such as price, availability and
delivery schedule. Extensive interaction with shipboard and
shoreside management in Operations, Accounting, and Logistics to
ensure cost optimization for the assigned category. Thorough
understanding of all cost components in an international market
including currency, underlying commodity and logistics. Makes
recommendations to management on financial planning, specifications
and economic ordering quantities. Maintains direct lines of
communication with end user departments to ensure effective
product/service/supplier performance, specification adherence and
provides input to spending discipline.
Commodity Expertise: A description of the specific commodity
expertise requirements and complexity of the category including
price and demand elasticity.
Contractual Knowledge: Thorough knowledge of advanced contract terms
and conditions and advance knowledge of uniform commercial code.
Expert knowledge and contributing author of the company's delivery
and invoicing policies.
Negotiation Skills: Develops a procurement and negotiation strategy
based on multiple and often complex variables. Negotiates price,
availability, transportation and delivery schedule.
Analysis: Performs complex price analysis of multiple variables.
Expert use of analysis, forecasting, problem solving and quality
improvement to develop strategies for dynamic market conditions.
Responsible for implementing and driving change.
Decision Making: Makes negotiation decisions often in
high-volatility situations based on multiple market variables with
limited guidelines for price and availability.
Spend Managed: Typically makes recommendations for expenditure
commitments in excess of $15MM. $100,000 discrete transaction
expenditure limit.

Experience required:
Minimum Experience and Education: Minimum
requirement Bachelor degree in Marine Engineering with five (5)
years experience as Purchasing Manager in Shipping Company (Cruise,
Passenger, Tanker or Container sector). Shipboard experience as
Engineer is preferable.
Minimum Experience and Education: 7 years relevant experience in an
international procurement environment. Bachelor degree in a business
discipline or combination of trade experience and education.
Supervision Received: Works independently with substantial freedom
for unreviewed action or decision. Reviews progress with management.
Supervision Extended: Provides guidance and/or instruction to SC
Professional II - V.
Travel: Ability to travel domestic and international.
